how to install battlefield 1942

**prerequisites**
- DirectPlay (https://forum.dadlan.au/t/enable-directplay-on-windows-for-older-games/423)
- DirectX redistributables (either [offline](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109) or [online](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35) installer)

**instructions**
first, download "Battlefield_1942_World_War_II_Anthology_Win_Setup_EN.7z" from https://oldgamesdownload.com/battlefield-1942/

then, extract the files from the .7z archive using an archiver such as 7zip, then find where you extracted the files and 
start the install program (i cant be bothered to download it again and check, but there should be only one executable)
when it asks you where you want to install BF1942, COPY THE PATH IT SHOWS! this will be important later!
go through the rest of the installer.

when it finishes, go here https://team-simple.org/download/
and in order:

- install [Battlefield 1942 v1.61 Retail executable patched](https://team-simple.org/download/bf1942-v1.61-retail-patched.zip) (extract files to your Battlefield 1942 installation directory. for me its "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\Battlefield 1942" but it could be different for you)

- install [GameSpy patch](https://team-simple.org/downloads/bf1942/patches/client/bf1942-gamespy-patch.exe) (make sure that, when prompted, you set the installation directory to the path you copied earlier (for me its "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\Battlefield 1942" but it could be different for you))

- install [SiMPLE BF1942 New Maps installer](https://team-simple.org/downloads/bf1942/map-packs/SiMPLE-BF1942-New-Maps.exe) (same as GameSpy patch, make sure that when prompted you set the installation directory to where you installed BF1942. once again, for me its "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\Battlefield 1942" but it may be different for you)

once you have installed these patches, go to your BF1942 installation directory (the path you copied earlier), find the "BF1942.exe" executable,
right click it, click "Properties", go to the "Compatibility" tab, check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and in the box below that, 
change "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" or whatever value it is using to "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)" 
**(NOTE: leaving it as "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" may still work, but I'd still just go ahead and change it)**

after that, you should be able to play BF1942! enjoy!

**the files linked below are optional, but you may find them useful**

- **(optional but recommended)** [dgVoodoo2 DirectX wrapper](https://github.com/dege-diosg/dgVoodoo2/releases/download/v2.87.3/dgVoodoo2_87_3.zip) (open the zip archive and go to the "MS" folder, then "x86", and copy everything in the "x86" folder to your BF1942 installation directory. once again, for me its "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\Battlefield 1942" but it may be different for you. you may also want to copy "dgVoodooCpl.exe" and "dgVoodoo.conf" from the root directory (the one that contains the "MS" folder and everything else) to your BF1942 installation directory so you can disable the dgVoodoo watermark. **you can also use [dxvk](https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases/download/v3.0.1/dxvk-3.0.1.tar.gz) if you have a modern video card. to install dxvk, copy all the DLLs from the "x32" folder of the dxvk tarball to your BF1942 installation directory.**)

- **(optional but recommended)** [4GB virtual memory patch for 32 bit executables](https://ntcore.com/4gb-patch/) (extract the zip archive anywhere, then find the "4gb_patch.exe" executable, and run it. it will ask you to select a .exe file to patch. go to your BF1942 installation folder (once again, for me its "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\Battlefield 1942" but it may be different for you) and select the "BF1942.exe" executable. click "Open" and it will patch the executable (also creates a backup that you can restore if the patch ends up breaking something) to have 4GB of virtual memory instead of 2GB. this may improve performance.)

- **(optional but may fix sound issues)** [Creative ALchemy Universal installer](https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/28-creative-alchemy-universal/) (extract "ALUNI_PCVTAPP_LB_1_00_8.exe" from the zip archive, and once extracted, open the executable to start the installer.)

- **(optional)** [2xFont](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DGRkMnAoffO0JtS_MjHDQN2fCkO75IVd/view) (download the Font.rfa file from the Google Drive linked and copy it to {BF1942 installation directory}\Mods\bf1942\Archives, and when prompted to overwrite the existing Font.rfa file, select "Replace the file in the destination" (replace {BF1942 installation directory} with the path to your BF1942 installation directory, once again for me its "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\Battlefield 1942" but it may be different for you.)
